This IMI working paper by MSc in Migration Studies alumni by Farhan Samanani examines the role of clan identities for Somalis, both in Somalia and the UK diaspora.
A tension exists in the migration and diaspora literatures about migrants' relationship with their home country and their friends and family left behind. In this paper, Farhan explores the notion of belonging and how this shapes migrants attachment and engagement with their 'home' country.
This working paper has been developed from Farhan's Masters Dissertation. Students in the MSc in Migration Studies receiving a distinction for their thesis are invited to publish a modified version as an IMI and COMPAS joint working paper.
