Transatlantic Dialogues on Migration and Development Issues

Project aim

The project aims to facilitate a transatlantic North-South exchange among policy makers and scholars and to combine discussion between actors and direct field observation of the differential impacts of migration.

Project funding

This project is supported by a grant from the German Marshall Fund of the United States as part of its Immigration and Integration Key Institutions grant programme. We have also received funding from the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) and the Fondation Hassan II.

Study tours

The project activities included two study tours for scholars, policy makers and civil society representatives from the EU, Morocco, US and Mexico to both Mexican and Moroccan migrant sending regions. There were visits to migrants' associations and sites where projects funded by migrants have been implemented.

Mexico (16-20 March 2009, Zacatecas)

After the Mexico tour, a workshop was organised to compare findings, and to discuss the effectiveness of current policies and possible policy alternatives. Recommendations for policy and research were formulated.
