The fifth Annual Conference of the African Borderlands Research Network (ABORNE) will be held in Lisbon, Portugal on 21-25 September 2011. Following the annual meetings in Edinburgh (2007), Bayreuth (2008), Johannesburg (2009) and Basel (2010), the 2011 conference addresses a broad range of perspectives on African borders, focusing, however, on cross-border circulation and on migration and mobility in and through African borderlands.

IMI part of successful Leverhulme bid for work on diasporas

The University of Oxford has won a £1.74 million grant from the Leverhulme Trust for a research programme on ‘The Impact of Diasporas’. The programme bid was coordinated and written by Robin Cohen (IMI), Nicholas Van Hear (Centre on Migration, Policy and Society) and Alan Gamlen (IMI). The bid also includes scholars based in the Refugee Studies Centre; the African Studies Centre; the School of Geography and the Environment; the Department of Politics and International Relations; and the Faculty of History.

The International Migration Institute and the Middle East Centre at St Antony’s College at the University of Oxford organised a one-day workshop on 18 June 2010 focusing on migration to the Gulf countries. The workshop, 'Migrations to the Gulf Countries: Form Exception to Normality?', was made possible thanks to the support of the Maison Française at Oxford and the International Migration Institute. The convenors were Hein de Haas, Helene Thiollet, and Leila Vignal, and it was attended by scholars from different disciplinary fields including history, social sciences, international relations and economy.
